You must undo both the positive and the negative about the world

Jesus describes this physical world as nothing, and the body as nothing. There are many references to it being no thing at all. And because it is not really anything, it does not actually have ANY kinds of attributes, neither positive or negative. The world is meaningless.

"You think that what upsets you is a frightening world, or a sad world, or a violent world, or an insane world. All these attributes are given it by you. The world is meaningless in itself."

"The idea for today is, of course, the reason why a meaningless world is impossible. What God did not create does not exist." (He did not create the world because it IS meaningless).

"The world is nothing in itself. Your mind must give it meaning. And what you behold upon it are your wishes, acted out so you can look on them and think them real"

Because the world and body are nothing, they are neutral, and act like a mirror. This is why it's all a matter of purpose here - you can take something that is natural and either use it "for good" or "for evil." There are multiple ways to interpret and see the world and the body precisely because in and of themselves they have no meaning. You can hate them, you can love them, but neither attitude changes the fact that IN AND OF THEMSELVES, they are nothing with no meaning.

"At no SINGLE instant does the body exist at all."

"YOU DO NOT WANT THE WORLD. The only thing of value in it is whatever part of it YOU look upon with love. This GIVES it the only reality it will ever have. ITS value is NOT in itself, but yours IS in you."

This is why the course says the world is meaningless and the only meaning it seems to have is the meaning you give it temporarily. And the only reality it seems to have is the love you see in it, as a result of projecting that love onto it, because it has none of its own. As such the world acts like a mirror. A mirror has no image of its own, no meaning of its own. It reflects what is projected onto it. This is why perception has the law that you see "in" things what you put there to see.

In terms of the body for example the body is not negative, but it is also not positive. If we have hate toward it, fear of it, anger at it, etc, we'd say those are negative things to get rid of and undo because they seem ego. But most people don't realize that ego ALSO entails giving POSITIVE attributes to illusory meaningless things. That includes idolising the body, worshipping it, putting it on a pedestal, giving it magical properties, imagining that it is eternal or a creation of God's, thinking of it as your real identity, trying to make it live forever, regarding it as holy etc.

These are all attempts to give GOD'S (and Christ's) attributes to things which are unreal and have no attributes. For example believing the world is real is an attempt to give God's attribute of reality to the unreal. THAT has to be undone, because it is an attempt to make the world take on a positive attribute. If you "love rainbows" for example you're investing an illusory dream empty nothing rainbow with attributes of specialness and idolisation and magical powers and so on, to try to make it something you want, something you value, something positive. But it has none of that.

Even things that "give you pleasure" or "make you happy" in the world, are artificial meanings given to things to frame them as positive and desirable. That includes attraction to bodies, little cute babies and kittens and puppies, worshipped celebrities, favourite colours, preferred locations, toys and treasures, and so on. These things are not positive or holy or good. They are neutral and have been given artificial meanings.

True holiness and reality are truly positive because positivity is about giving and extending something real. Creation "positively adds" to creation through creative extension. Illusions and sin are SUBTRACTIVE not additive, causing them to LOSE MEANING. It is a MYTH that ego is purely "negative" only and that we have to simply get rid of all our negativity in order to stop being ego. Ego can easily be framed as what SEEMS like an ILLUSION OF POSITIVITY, including illusions of spirituality and awakening.

Given that the world is literally NOTHING, it's not really there, which is the whole teaching that there is no world. This entire physical space, this planet, these bodies, space and time, are all made up in the mind and don't really exist. They appear to exist but they don't have the same substance of presence and creative power and immortality that real existence has. They are empty, illusions of symbols in a dream. If you think they are more than that, that they are "something", then you will start giving them attributes, and that will be a distortion of what they are - a delusion about them. That must be undone, regardless of whether the meanings you're giving seem positive or negative.

"What is the ego? Nothingness, but in a form that seems like something."

"To see a SINLESS body is impossible. For holiness is POSITIVE, and the body is merely neutral. It is NOT sinful, but neither is it sinless. As nothing, which it IS, the body cannot meaningfully be invested with attributes of Christ OR of the ego. EITHER must be an error, for both would place the attributes where they cannot BE. And BOTH must be undone, for purposes of truth."

"His body's nothingness releases yours from sickness and from death"

This for example tells you that when you recognize your brother's body as NOTHING, and NOT HIM, this recognition also extends to you and allows you to see your own body as nothing and not yourself. And it is by seeing the body AS NOTHING that it becomes healed because it is no longer being distorted and twisted and forced to try to be something it is not.

"Lesson 294 "My body is a wholly neutral thing."

"I am a Son of God. And can I be another thing as well? Did God create the mortal and corruptible? What use has God's beloved Son for what must die? And yet a neutral thing does not see death, for thoughts of fear are not invested there, nor is a mockery of love bestowed upon it. Its neutrality protects it while it has a use. And afterwards, without a purpose, it is laid aside. It is not sick or old or hurt. It is but functionless, unneeded and cast off."

Here again Jesus reiterates that the physical human body IS NOTHING, and being nothing is it only NEUTRAL. Its neutrality, recognized, "protects it", because if your mind realises the body is neutral it stops giving it magical powers, level confusions, and thus sickness. Sickness is a form of believing that the body level has the power to miscreate in the mind, for example. It can only do that if your mind believes the body is SOMETHING (and not nothing) that has attributes. Those attributes you give it it does NOT have, and giving it attributes makes it sick.

"The body is hardly worth the least defense"

"The body's health is fully guaranteed because it is not limited by time, by weather or fatigue, by food and drink, or any laws you made it serve before. You need do nothing now to make it well, for sickness has become impossible."

If you try to defend the body you attack it and make it sick. If you let it be nothing, it will not be sick. If you make up laws about what it is or isn't, and give it labels, and start calling it holy or beautiful or immortal or innocent, you are delusional. The body cannot be either innocent OR guilty.

This is where I think this whole area is misunderstood or not recognized by many people. We think in either/or terms that something has to be EITHER guilty OR innocent. If it's innocent it must not be guilty. And if ego is guilt, then we think that by taking away guilt from the body and the world we make them innocent. Or if we take away ego we must be removing guilt and that must result in innocence. But that innocence is in the mind, NOT the world or the body. And if we start believing that we pivot on an axis ranging from "the world is guilty" to "the world is innocent" and think that applies to the physical, we will be mistaken. That axis is in our mind only, not on the physical level.

Thus the world doesn't go from being guilty to being innocent, and it doesn't go from being unforgiven to being forgiven. It goes from being SOMETHING TO NOTHING. And that's very different. The body goes from being something to nothing also. While our mind might become more innocent and loving and holy and see from that loving holiness a reflection of love and holiness seemingly "in the world", because the world is a mirror and perception functions like a mirror, that does NOT mean that the world ITSELF has become innocent and holy. That is NOT POSSIBLE because it isn't a true creation or a truly existing present immortal substance.

Jesus is asking us to stop giving the world ANY attributes at all. To withdraw from it ALL the meanings we have given it, regardless of whether we think of those meanings as spiritual and loving and good, or evil and negative and bad. Trying to turn the world - which is nothing - into a "something" IS EGO. Regardless of the form or meaning or whether it seems to symbolize life or death or evil or holiness. Making the world ANYTHING is the problem, because the world is not really there.

"Hallucinations serve to meet the goal of madness. They are the means by which the OUTSIDE world, projected from within, ADJUSTS to sin, and SEEMS to witness to its reality. It still is true that nothing IS without. Yet, upon nothing, are ALL projections made. For it is the PROJECTION which gives the "nothing" ALL the meaning that it holds. What has NO meaning, cannot BE perceived. And meaning ALWAYS looks within, to find itself. And THEN looks out. ALL meaning that you give the world outside, must thus reflect the sight you saw WITHIN. Or better, IF you saw at all, or merely judged AGAINST."

"Earth can reflect Heaven or hell; God or the ego. You need but leave the mirror clean, and clear of all the images of hidden darkness you have drawn upon it. God will shine upon it of Himself."

"What is meaningless is neither good nor bad. Why, then, should a meaningless world upset you? If you could accept the world as meaningless and let the truth be written upon it for you, it would make you indescribably happy. But because it is meaningless, you are impelled to write upon it what you would have it be. It is this you see in it. It is this that is meaningless in truth. Beneath your words is written the Word of God. The truth upsets you now, but when your words have been erased, you will see His. That is the ultimate purpose of these exercises."

"God's teachers can have no regret on giving up the pleasures of the world. Is it a sacrifice to give up pain? Does an adult resent the giving up of children's toys? Does one whose vision has already glimpsed the Face of Christ look back with longing on a slaughter house? No-one who has escaped the world and all its ills looks back on it with condemnation. Yet he must rejoice that he is free of all the sacrifice which its values would demand of him. To them he sacrifices all his freedom. To them he sacrifices all his peace. And to possess them must he sacrifice his hope of Heaven and remembrance of his Father's Love. Who in his sane mind chooses nothing as a substitute for everything?"

"This interpretation of the body will change your mind entirely about its value. Of itself it has NONE."

"Let us today behold earth disappear, at first transformed, and then, forgiven, fade entirely into God's holy Will."

"The body disappears, and no longer hides what lies beyond. It merely ceases to interfere with vision. To roll the stone away is to see beyond the tomb, beyond death, and to understand the body's nothingness. What is understood as nothing must disappear."
